If you are asking yourself the question “how do I do a CV” then this is a good opportunity to get it right first time. When writing your CV is it important that you use the following principles to make you stand out from your competition. Remember that first impressions do count and when your CV is read for the first time that this is when you will be included or removed from the selection process. Your CV must be strong enough to get through the rigorous candidate selection processes that exist today within both large and small companies.
If your CV is not being selected on a regular basis then the chances are that there is something fundamentally wrong with your CV and it needs to be changed.
Here are the key principles to follow when creating your CV :-
1. Ensure that your CV is as clear and concise as possible, whilst still having all the necessary information. Your CV should be more than 3 to 4 pages long.
2. Ensure that your CV includes a personal statement at the beginning of your CV, after your personal data – such as Name, address, telephone number. The personal statement must be powerful enough to make the reader of your CV want to read on through your current and previous jobs.
3. Whilst your CV must cover your entire working career it is also important to ensure that it specifically focuses on your most recent achievements.
Your CV must contain the following details on page 1:-
Your Name, Address, Contact Telephone Number, Nationality, Education,
Driving License, E-mail Address, Date of your availability to start work, Main
competencies (short paragraph), Key Skills (short paragraph).
The subsequent pages of your CV must contain the following information about each of the jobs that you have had in your working career – regardless of how long or short your career has been :-
- Position held
- Company
- Start Date and Finish Date
- Responsibilities
- Your key successes you have had in each of your previous and current jobs.
